‘In a direction opposite to the usual’ – one Wikipedia rendering of widdershins

Updated: Jan 19, 2020

Discombobulator of the day:

he weathered all the striding years till they ran widdershins in his brain (Judith Wright, Bullocky)

How would you begin to draw a picture of humanity at home on planet Earth? That is a rather personal question – one that offers the chance to respond not just from the head but the head–heart, that is, respond more fulsomely than people out there usually expect of you. It confronts the reader with a juxtaposition of concepts that don’t commonly sit together, are not often used in the same breath in our everyday comings and goings – words drawn together from different galaxies of usage. Placing them together in a simple question could give the reader a disorienting sensation, as if something is amiss. ‘Did he do a typo?’ I hear someone asking.
